Air Purifying Plants - The Best Pollution Fighters as per NASA study
Metro cities have nowadays turned up into the living concrete jungle. People live in closed boxed homes with lesser fresh air movement in the air, more indoor pollution gets built up inside our homes and offices, turning them into smokehouses.
In a study by NASA, they have realized that usage of Air purifiers especially the natural ones has become the need of the hour. NASA study recommends the usage of big size pot air purifying plants. Using 3-4 mid-size such plants can clean up the indoor air of about 100 square feet.
Each plant has its own air purifying capabilities depending upon the type of pollutants they remove from surrounding air. Certain harmful chemicals are- ammonia, benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, etc. These plants were able to remove about 90%-95% of the air pollutants and hence providing fresh air to breathe. The more such plants you have the more fresh air you get to breathe indoors.
Air pollution leads to health problems such as asthma, cancer, blood and heart diseases. Carcinogens are being known as the substances which can cause Cancer in living tissues like those present in humans. So, Indoor Air pollution is a real danger for Human Health and people are unaware that indoor pollution is many times greater than outdoor air pollution as per NASA recent study. It was observed that plants can absorb other harmful gases such as the Volatile organic compounds.
Nasa study suggests that golden pothos can be used to reduce toxins such as xylene, toluene, formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide. Whereas Aloe vera and Syngoniums can help reduce other air pollutants. The other plants listed by Nasa for removing pollutants from your indoor air are- Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Boston Fern, Palm Varieties, Chinese evergreen.
So before you run to mall/stores for buying an expensive air purifier, why not try cleaning the air natural way at home? All the plants listed above are easy to care for and require very little maintenance. More cost-effective than air filters or purifiers, it will also make your home look more attractive.
